Chennai crush Stags to begin Champions League on a high

first_imgChennai Super Kings crushed Central Districts Stags by 57 runs to begin their Champions League campaign on a high.Chennai Super Kings vs Central District Stags, ScoresBrief Scores: Chennai 151-4 (20); Stags 94 all out (18)Champions League 2010 – Special Coverage  The IPL champions posted 151-4, a hard-fought score set up with Subramaniam Badrinath’s unbeaten 52 and Srikkanth Anirudha’s enterprising 42 after been promoted up the order ahead of MS Dhoni.Stags, the New Zealand domestic T20 champions, were bowled out for 94 in 18 overs. They struggled to get going under lights at the Kingsmead. Chennai’s pacers Doug Bollinger and Albie Morkel choked up the runs before the spin twins Muttiah Muralitharan and R Ashwin blew away their top-order.Anirudha led Chennai’s fightback adding 73 with Badrinath in 8.1 overs after they were tottering at 40-3 in the ninth over.Opener Matthew Hayden fell for a first-ball duck and Suresh Raina for 4. Both were done in by short balls, as was Murali Vijay (19).Hayden pulled one from Michael Mason that bounced a little more than expected to deep square leg. Raina, having glanced a first-ball four off Adam Milne, fended off a short ball to slip.Vijay too was caught at slip, off Mitchell McClenaghan. Chennai’s pace force of Bollinger and Morkel, followed by the swing of Lakshmipathy Balaji, was expected to trouble Stags. But their spinners did more damage to the Stags.Dhoni’s men dropped a couple of easy catches early on. Ashwin put down Peter Ingram running back to midwicket while Raina floored skipper Jamie How at cover.advertisementIngram didn’t last long, skying Morkel to Raina at cover. Before they knew it, the Stags had slipped to 44-6 in the 11th over and the game was all but over by then.Doug Bracewell’s 30 batting at No. 9 took them towards three-figures but Bollinger’s final over produced two wickets to end their innings at 94.last_img read more

Rich haul in a day’s work

first_imgHowever much you abuse the Indian sporting system, it’s no secret that we have an abundance of shooting talent. And they are the ones who gain the most from the government support. On Tuesday, unsung and unknown Rahi Sarnobat from Kolhapur came out with her pistol smoking as she teamed up with seasoned Anisa Sayyed to secure India their second gold medal from shooting.Rahi’s individual score of 296 out of 300 was by any standard world class, and she has been lucky to learn the nuances of ‘sports pistol’ from former international shooter Sheela Kanungo. This was Rahi’s first big medal, though she had served notice of her talent earlier this year when she made it a World Cup final in Australia.Rahi started off as an air pistol shooter and graduated to sports pistol over two years ago. Old timers rave about her as the one for the future, as on Tuesday, she was comfortable with both precision and duelling. And however much we complain about the Commonwealth Games, Rahi’s success began at the Pune Youth Commonwealth Games in 2008.On a day when the country’s two top rifle shooters – Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang — shot a golden gold for India, this also set the tone for an exciting individual final on Wednesday. It’s going to be a nerve-jangling affair as they have scores to settle, though they will never admit it. Gagan had told me before the Games he wants to win six gold medals. May be too early to get carried away, but surely not beyond the realms of reality.advertisementThat apart, the rich haul from the wrestling arena was simply out of the world. Agreed, Ravinder Singh and Sanjay were tipped favourites, but the way Anil grappled was breathtaking against an ugly Aussie opponent answering to the name of Hassene Fkiri.Hassene had the height and build advantage but when it came to using the brain, Anil showed everyone how cool he is and used his brain well.Despite rough play from Hassene, Anil did not get flustered. All the same, when the technical panel decided to suspend Hassene, it was a clear signal that in modern day sport, there is no scope for unprofessional conduct. The Aussies always take great pride in representing their country and Hassene shamed them on Tuesday. To head-butt, still lose and not even shake hands with Anil after losing the gold was simply ugly.last_img read more

John Abraham to celebrate Durga Puja in Kolkata

first_imgJohn AbrahamHe has been dating Bengali beauty Bipasha Basu for the past seven years and it looks like Bollywood heartthrob John Abraham is a Bong’ at heart as he will be celebrating Durga Puja with his lady love in her native Kolkata. The Dostana star will be savouring puchkas and visiting the pandals with Bipasha at Ballygunge, where she grew up.Yes, I will be celebrating Durga Puja in Kolkata. I had also stayed in Ballygunge for 9 years and I am very attached to that place, said the actor who was in the capital to promote his upcoming flick Jhootha Hi Sahin. While Durga Puja celebrations are high on his priority list, the actor said that his tight schedule meant that he gave the Commonwealth Games a miss. The 37-year-old is a avid sports fan and had visited South Africa during the Football World Cup. I had a very tight schedule and not much time to spend in Delhi, so I was not able to attend any of the Commonwealth events, John told PTI.While he is a dedicated boyfriend, John says that like his character Sid in Jhootha Hi Sahin, he sometimes lies to Bipasha If I lie it shows on my face. But I think white-lies are ok as long it does not hurt or harm someone, said the actor. He had left both men and women swooning with his dare-to-bare act in Dostana, but John has shed his famous chiseled physique to play a nerd in the romantic comedy, which releases on 22 October.advertisementThough Abraham’s earlier attempts to escape from his brawny image in films like Kabul Express, No Smoking and Aashayein failed at the box office, John is quite confident that his latest flick would click with the audience. An actor should try to get out of his comfort zone. He should have the guts to experiment with different roles and provide something different to his fans. My earlier films may have failed but they received wide critical acclaim,” said the actor. Day 12: Anna Hazare’s morning address says fast continues

first_imgAhead of the debate on Lokpal issue in Parliament, Anna Hazare on Saturday addressed his supporters declaring that he will continue his protest till his last breath.Amid mounting worries over the 74-year-old Gandhian’s health, Hazare said he could fast for another “three-four days” and “nothing will happen to him”.Hazare, who hadn’t addressed his supporters since 8 pm on August 25, emerged on the dais at around 10 am to a loud cheer from supporters who raised slogans like ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’, ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Inquilab Zindabad’.”I am not doing this for my personal gain. If it was so, I would not have lasted five days. Till Jan Lokpal Bill is passed, my protest will continue,” the Gandhian told his supporters at Ramlila Maidan. It’s the 12th day of his fast today. He said he was getting energy from those who are coming out in support of the cause and this energy will help him sustain for three-four more days. “Till Jan Lokpal Bill is passed, I won’t die,” he said in his speech that lasted for five minutes.Hazare said he was surprised at the manner in which the country has responded to his call for fight against corruption. He then referred to a person who was sporting a tattoo on his shoulder that stated that he was a supporter of the Gandhian.”I am surprised that a ‘fakir’ is getting this support. It is not me who is doing all this. God has chosen me to do the work. It is he who is doing all this. I am praised for what I am doing. A ‘fakir’ should not be praised so much,” he said.advertisementlast_img read more
