Overcrowding fears at Letterkenny halting site

first_imgDONEGAL COUNTY Council has been granted Circuit Court orders to remove unauthorised occupants from a Letterkenny halting some.Concerns were raised by the Chief Fire Officer about overcrowding, which prompted the action. Donegal County Council brought the matter to Letterkenny Circuit Court against Francis Crumlish, Dana Crumlish and Tom McDonagh, all of Canal Road Group Housing Scheme, Neil T Blaney Road, Letterkenny. The halting site has seven halts and eight houses, all of which have approved tenants.Gareth McGrory, BL, for Donegal County Council., said the site was ‘under strain with over occupancy’.“What has happened is a developing problem,” Mr McGrory said.“Unauthorised tenants turn up, park their caravans and occupy it. Significant fire safety concerns have been expressed.”Ms Dana Crumlish, speaking in court, said she resided at the address for eight years. Gardaí, she said, had seized her caravan and she had been placed in a house in Letterkenny. “I got my van back from the guards and released to the site,” Ms Crumlish who has two sons, aged 17 and 15, said.In October, Judge Eoin Garavan granted an order preventing the defendants from occupying the lands, but put a stay on the order to allow residents engage with DCC in an attempt to find emergency accommodation.Judge John Aylmer said he was not going to look behind the order made by Judge Garavan.“He has taken the view that an order should be granted in favour of the Council,” Judge Aylmer said.“He put a stay to allow them to engage with the Council for alternative accommodation. This is not a court of appeal. If you want to appeal, your will have to go to the High Court.”The defendants outlined a willingness to engage with the Council.Ms Crumlish said she did not want to leave the site. She claimed to have been offered accommodation for only one night and for one child, which was not suitable to her.Mr McGrory said he believed the defendants did not reside there on a permanent basis.“They come and go,” he told the Court.Judge Aylmer said Ms Crumlish would have to ‘haunt the place’ (the Council offices) looking for alternative accommodation.Overcrowding fears at Letterkenny halting site was last modified: November 25th, 2019 by Chris McNultyShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Donegal County CouncilHalting SiteJudge John AylmerletterkennyLetterkenny Circuit Courtlast_img read more

Feedly May be the Best Mobile Feed Reader Yet

first_imgFeed reading on the go is an unsolved problem, none of the available options really feels like they’ve nailed it yet. Feedly, the popular browser plug-in that turns your Google Reader subscriptions into an attractive magazine-style display, has just released an iPhone app that may be my favorite mobile feed reader I’ve tried. (iTunes link) When I’ve got free time and am looking for something good to read, I’ve been launching Feedly for the past few months that I’ve been testing it.The app, which sells for $2.99, offers an attractive folder-based navigation that’s easy to thumb through horizontally. Sharing, bookmarking, Tweeting and emailing are all very easy to do. There’s no limit to the number of feeds you can subscribe to in the app. It uses a popularity metric to surface key items in each folder of subscriptions that you should read if in a time crunch. It’s a great little app and well worth a few dollars.I do wish that Feedly scaled up better on the iPad. The horizontal navigation that it offers makes a huge difference, though, on the iPhone. The contest is being administered by the Spanish travel company eDreams in a “special white label integration via Facebook,” according to Worldreader Director of Communications Susan Moody-Prieto. Upload your video to the eDreams Facebook page for consideration. The deadline is March 30 and the winner will be the person who submits the video with the most public votes by the end of April 1. The winner will be announced on April 4. The winner will have a chance to work with Worldreader on their Ghana program and have everything paid for. Moody-Prieto outlines the trip.“(The winner) will be flown down to Ghana, met by someone on our team, spend a day touring Accra, then they’ll head out to the schools where we have the e-readers and help Worldreader with reading exercises with the students and help out teachers. They’ll do that for a couple of days, and then we’ll be following up with some of the students who we filmed last time, going with them into their homes again and talking to their parents about how they are using the e-readers in the family.”Don’t expect a luxury safari, however, she warns. “It ain’t 5 star luxury living. US accuses Russia of breaching Cold Warera treaties

US accuses Russia of breaching Cold Warera treaties

first_imgUS president Donald Trump (L) and Russia`s president Vladimir Putin. Photo: AFPThe United States on Thursday accused Moscow of openly breaching Cold War-era treaties by developing what Russian President Vladimir Putin called a new generation of “invincible” hypersonic weapons and submarines.Putin unveiled the new arsenal earlier Thursday in a state of the nation address, challenging Washington to a new arms race ahead of a presidential election that will all but certainly confirm his grip on power.Putin left his usual Kremlin perch to this year speak from a nearby exhibition center-allowing him to show a series of video montages of missiles crossing mountains and oceans, heading over the Atlantic before striking the US eastern seaboard. He quoted a speech he gave in 2004, vowing that Russia would develop a new generation of weaponry, a promise that he said he has now fulfilled.“No one really wanted to talk to us basically. No one listened to us then. Listen to us now,” Putin said, prompting a standing ovation from the audience of top officials, lawmakers and celebrities. He presented Russia’s military efforts as a response to recent actions by the United States, which last month unveiled plans to revamp its own nuclear arsenal and develop new low-yield atomic weapons.‘Cheesy’ attack video -The State Department expressed outrage at Putin’s presentation and his “cheesy” animated video of warheads over US soil-and said the Russian leader had confirmed long-held allegations about his program.“It was certainly unfortunate to have watched the video animation that depicted a nuclear attack on the United States,” spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters.“That’s something that we certainly didn’t enjoy watching. We don’t regard that as the behavior of a responsible international player,” she added.“President Putin has confirmed what the United States government has known for a long time but that Russia has denied prior to this,” she added.“Russia has been developing destabilizing weapons systems for more than a decade in direct violation of its treaty obligations.”Specifically, Nauert said that Moscow had proven itself in violation of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), through its development of ground-launched cruise missiles. The Pentagon reacted with more equanimity, with a spokesman insisting that the US military remains “fully prepared” to react to “anything that comes our way.”The United States has long accused Russia of breaching the INF treaty and, while it is modernizing its own nuclear arsenal, says that it remains in compliance with the terms of the Cold War accord. The spat came as relations between the powers lie frozen at levels not seen since the Cold War over the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria and accusations that Moscow interfered in the US presidential election in 2016.Also Thursday, the US formally approved the sale of Javelin anti-tank missiles to Ukraine, which is fighting a Russian-backed insurgency in the east of the country. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Ukraine has asked President Donald Trump’s US administration for permission to buy 210 missiles and 37 launchers at a cost of around $47 million‘Fantastic’ submarines -In a speech that ran almost two hours, Putin showed tests of a new missile system that he said could fly at 20 times the speed of sound and maneuver up and down, and is not owned by any other country.“This makes it absolutely invincible for any forms of air and missile defense,” he boasted, calling it an “ideal weapon.”Russia has also developed unmanned underwater devices that move much faster than submarines and torpedoes and can carry nuclear warheads, Putin said, adding: “It’s just fantastic!”Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu later said Russian arms would be able to “overcome all existing anti-missile systems” such as those the US intends to deploy in eastern Europe and South Korea.“This anti-missile ‘umbrella’ turns out to be a bit ‘leaky’,” he said in comments released by his ministry.Putin, who has led Russia for almost two decades and is seeking in the March 18 election a historic fourth Kremlin term that would extend his rule to 2024, also laid out a number of domestic measures in the speech.Putin has refused to take part in TV debates with other candidates, but the address suggested cutting poverty and improving the environment would be among the top goals of his expected new six-year term.‘Unacceptable’ poverty -The 65-year-old vowed to cut the country’s “unacceptable” poverty rate in half over six years, but said 22 million fewer Russians were now living below the poverty line than when he was first elected president.Putin, who coughed throughout the speech and was forced to pause to drink, was given an ecstatic reception in the hall during the televised address but some online comments were less complimentary.“The old man only perked up when he was talking about how he can destroy the world. A moment of truth!” former Kremlin advisor Gleb Pavlovsky said on social media.Despite Putin’s campaign promises when he returned to the Kremlin in 2012 after four years as prime minister, his last term was marked by a fall in living standards and Russia’s international isolation.Boosted by a slavish media and foreign military adventures such as the annexation of Crimea in 2014, his approval rating remains sky-high and official polls suggest he will take almost 70 percent of the vote on March 18.last_img

US brings back sanctions lifted after Iran nuclear deal

US brings back sanctions lifted after Iran nuclear deal

first_imgA man walks past an anti-US mural in Tehran, Iran on 13 October. Photo: ReutersThe leaders of Iran and the United States traded accusations Monday as the clock ticked down to Washington’s reimposition of sweeping sanctions on Tehran, which dismissed Donald Trump’s offer of talks on a new nuclear deal. After Trump told Iran to change its “destabilizing” behaviour or risk further economic isolation-while leaving the door open to negotiation-Iranian president Hassan Rouhani accused America of “psychological warfare.”The comments all came as Iran braces for the return of sweeping US sanctions on Tuesday-the first round, which takes effect overnight, targets the Islamic republic’s access to US banknotes and key industries including cars and carpets.Trump’s withdrawal from the historic 2015 nuclear accord in May infuriated his European partners, as many European businesses operating in Iran could find themselves on the wrong side of the US sanctions.“The Iranian regime faces a choice,” Trump said in a statement. “Either change its threatening, destabilizing behaviour and reintegrate with the global economy, or continue down a path of economic isolation.”“I remain open to reaching a more comprehensive deal that addresses the full range of the regime’s malign activities, including its ballistic missile program and its support for terrorism,” he added. But Rouhani was unimpressed with the offer.“If you’re an enemy and you stab the other person with a knife, and then you say you want negotiations, then the first thing you have to do is remove the knife,” the Iranian leader said in an interview on state television.“They want to launch psychological warfare against the Iranian nation,” Rouhani said. “Negotiations with sanctions doesn’t make sense.”Iran’s currency has lost around half its value since Trump announced the US would withdraw from the nuclear pact. That has ramped up tensions inside Iran, which has seen days of protests and strikes in multiple towns and cities over water shortages, high prices and wider anger at the political system.Severe reporting restrictions have made it impossible to verify the swirl of claims making their way through social media.Journalists did, however, confirm a heavy buildup of riot police and a mobile internet blackout Sunday night in the town of Karaj, just west of Tehran, which has been a focal point of unrest.European dismayThe second phase of US sanctions, which takes effect 5 November and will block Iran’s oil sales, is due to cause more damage, though several countries including China, India and Turkey have indicated they are not willing to entirely cut their Iranian energy purchases. The European Union’s diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini said the bloc, as well as Britain, France and Germany, deeply regretted Washington’s move.“We are determined to protect European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran,” she said in a statement. Many large European firms are leaving Iran for fear of US penalties, and Trump warned of “severe consequences” against firms and individuals that continued to do business with Iran.Iran’s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told reporters the global reaction to Trump’s move showed that the US was diplomatically “isolated,” but acknowledged the sanctions “may cause some disruption.”Rouhani’s government has taken emergency measures to stem the collapse of the rial and brace for the return of sanctions. On Sunday, it eased foreign exchange rules, allowing unlimited tax-free currency and gold imports, and reopening exchange bureaus after a disastrous attempt to fix the value of the rial in April led to widespread black-market corruption. With senior religious authorities calling for a crackdown on graft, the judiciary said Sunday it had arrested the central bank’s foreign exchange boss, along with a government clerk and four currency brokers. The measures appeared to calm the markets, with the rial strengthening to 95,500 to the dollar-up a fifth on its record-low of 119,000 a fortnight ago.The US sees the sanctions “as a tool to pressure Iran to come back to the negotiating table to rehash the nuclear deal on terms more to Trump’s liking. That is not going to happen,” said John Glaser of the Cato Institute.Sanctions and talksTwo countries that have welcomed increased pressure on Iran are its key regional rivals, Israel and Saudi Arabia.Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the renewed sanctions as “an important moment for Israel, for the US, for the region, for the whole world.”There have been ongoing rumours that Trump and Rouhani could meet in New York in September at the United Nations General Assembly-though Rouhani reportedly rejected US overtures for a meeting at last year’s event. But that came less than a fortnight after a bellicose exchange between the two presidents, with Rouhani warning of the “mother of all wars” and Trump responding with a Twitter tirade against Iran’s “DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE.”last_img read more

ASUS servers hijacked pushed backdoor malware via software updates potentially affecting over

first_imgMotherboard, today, reported of a backdoor malware attack on ASUS’ servers, which took place last year between June and November 2018. The attack was discovered by Kaspersky Lab in January 2019 and was named ‘ShadowHammer’ thereafter. Researchers say that the attack was discovered after adding a new supply-chain detection technology to ASUS’ scanning tool to catch anomalous code fragments hidden in legitimate code or catch code that is hijacking normal operations on a machine. Kaspersky analysts told Kim Zetter, a cybersecurity journalist at Motherboard, that the backdoor malware was pushed to ASUS customers for at least five months before it was discovered and shut down. Researchers also said that attackers compromised ASUS’ server for the company’s live software update tool. Following which the attackers used it to push the malware to inadvertently install a malicious backdoor on thousands of its customers’ computers. The malicious file, however, was signed with legitimate ASUS digital certificates to make it appear to be an authentic software update from the company. One of Kaspersky’s spokesperson said, “Over 57,000 Kaspersky users have downloaded and installed the backdoored version of ASUS Live Update at some point in time… We are not able to calculate the total count of affected users based only on our data; however, we estimate that the real scale of the problem is much bigger and is possibly affecting over a million users worldwide”. According to researchers at Kaspersky Lab, the goal of the attack was to “surgically target an unknown pool of users, which were identified by their network adapters’ MAC addresses”. The attackers’ first hardcoded a list of MAC addresses in the trojanized samples and this list was used to identify the actual intended targets of this massive operation. “We were able to extract more than 600 unique MAC addresses from over 200 samples used in this attack. Of course, there might be other samples out there with different MAC addresses in their list”, the researchers mentioned. Zetter also tweeted about “a Reddit forum from last year where ASUS users were discussing the suspicious software update ASUS was trying to install on their machines in June 2018” Kaspersky Lab plans to release a full technical paper and presentation about the ASUS attack at its Security Analyst Summit held in Singapore next month. Vitaly Kamluk, Asia-Pacific director of Kaspersky Lab’s Global Research and Analysis Team, said, “This attack shows that the trust model we are using based on known vendor names and validation of digital signatures cannot guarantee that you are safe from malware.” Zetter writes, “Motherboard sent ASUS a list of the claims made by Kaspersky in three separate emails on Thursday but has not heard back from the company.” Costin Raiu, company-wide director of Kaspersky’s Global Research and Analysis Team, told Motherboard, “I’d say this attack stands out from previous ones while being one level up in complexity and stealthiness. The filtering of targets in a surgical manner by their MAC addresses is one of the reasons it stayed undetected for so long. If you are not a target, the malware is virtually silent.” In a press release, Asus stated that the backdoor was fixed in the Live Update version 3.6.8. The company has also “introduced multiple security verification mechanisms to prevent any malicious manipulation in the form of software updates or other means, and implemented an enhanced end-to-end encryption mechanism”, the press release states. Additionally, ASUS has also created an online security diagnostic tool to check for affected systems. To know more about the technical details on this attack, head over to Kaspersky’s website.
