Full circumpolar migration ensures evolutionary unity in the Emperor penguin

first_imgDefining reliable demographic models is essential to understand the threats of ongoing environmental change. Yet, in the most remote and threatened areas, models are often based on the survey of a single population, assuming stationarity and independence in population responses. This is the case for the Emperor penguin Aptenodytes forsteri, a flagship Antarctic species that may be at high risk continent-wide before 2100. Here, using genome-wide data from the whole Antarctic continent, we reveal that this top-predator is organized as one single global population with a shared demography since the late Quaternary. We refute the view of the local population as a relevant demographic unit, and highlight that (i) robust extinction risk estimations are only possible by including dispersal rates and (ii) colony-scaled population size is rather indicative of local stochastic events, whereas the species’ response to global environmental change is likely to follow a shared evolutionary trajectorylast_img read more

Discover All the Opportunities around Dell EMC Microsoft Solutions

first_imgLearn how three compelling events will help you drive customer conversations around the need to modernize their Microsoft application environments.Have you investigated the key reasons why you should be embracing and driving customer conversations around new Dell EMC Microsoft Solutions? We’ve now produced a full suite of training and sales enablement materials to help you get up to speed. There are three compelling events that will invariably help you drive business opportunities:Cloud strategy as an essential aspect of Modernized InfrastructureEvery one of your customers is considering how the cloud can help their business, and many have already moved some applications and development activities onto Microsoft Azure Public. However, many (if not most) Microsoft Azure Public users are actually looking for a hybrid cloud option – because of data gravity or application alignment. You can help them as they begin to work with the Microsoft Azure stack. How? By introducing them to Dell EMC VxRack AS for Microsoft Azure Stack, which brings the cloud to the workload, delivering infrastructure and platform as a service with a consistent Azure experience – both on-premises and in the public cloud.Proactively driving the dialog around optimizing development environments in a hybrid cloud model leads to logical conversations around the customer’s on-premise infrastructure status, as well as the key business applications, such as Microsoft SQL.It’s a compelling conversation and provides an excellent pivot point for further discussions around modernization and migration.Hyper-converged infrastructure helps drive tangible operational benefits Are your customers using hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) yet? With approximately >60% CAGR through 2019, HCI is not just a trend – it’s a phenomenon. Customers are realizing tremendous operational and performance benefits from hyper-convergence, and Dell EMC has the industry’s broadest HCI portfolio. Our Solutions for Microsoft Windows Server Software Defined (WSSD) / Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) deliver all the performance capabilities of Microsoft’s unique HCI design, with additional one-stop support – from the hardware, all the way to the software stack. What’s more, with the added cost benefit of free inclusion with Windows Datacenter Edition licenses, S2D eliminates the investment considerations – making it the perfect solution for customers who have already embraced Microsoft business applications, and a great recommendation for you to suggest to customers who haven’t yet tried it. The SQL Server 2008 end of support opportunity can accelerate application migrationsMicrosoft SQL is the most widely deployed database management solution on the market – approximately 3 times more broadly deployed than all other DBMS combined. So your customer’s SQL environment status should always be a topic of conversation. This is a major, compelling event – it affects 90% of organizations currently running SQL and is a massive opportunity for you as it will force many organizations to migrate to the latest version. You can provide significant business value by helping customers migrate to modernized infrastructure, with a modern operating system running on modern hardware and the most recent version of Microsoft SQL Server.Become a trusted advisor for the entire Microsoft data estateWhether they’re on their journey to Microsoft Azure cloud utilization, reaping the benefits of HCI modernization via Microsoft WSSD/S2D, or leveraging the enhanced data analytics and expanded business benefits delivered by Microsoft SQL, the Dell EMC Microsoft Solutions portfolio addresses your customer’s entire Microsoft data estate. These new pre-tested, pre-validated and fully certified Solutions help you support your customers on their journey towards Modernized Infrastructure, while also positioning you as a trusted advisor for optimal migrations and integrations. The above events will necessitate new infrastructure to support the core Microsoft applications. Pope is England’s best young player since Joe Root – Michael Vaughan

first_imgBy Stephan ShemiltFORMER England captain Michael Vaughan says Ollie Pope is England’s best young player since the emergence of current skipper Joe Root.Pope, 22, stroked an elegant 91 not out on the first day of the third Test against West Indies to help the hosts to 258-4.“He’s a wonderful player,” Vaughan told Test Match Special.“I don’t see a great deal going wrong with his game. It can pretty much cover all conditions.”Surrey’s Pope made his England debut as a 20-year-old against India in 2018, but was left out after playing only two matches. He returned for the tours over the past winter and made his maiden century against South Africa in January, along with three other half-centuries.Root was 21 when he made his Test debut in India in 2012. The deciding Test against West Indies is his 94th, during which time he has accumulated 7 661 runs.“Ollie Pope is the best young player I’ve seen in the England team since Joe Root,” added Vaughan, who himself made 5 719 runs in 82 Tests.“When he came on the scene a few years ago you could tell he probably wasn’t ready in his mind. “His game was possibly ready, but he wasn’t ready to cope with the big surroundings of Test match cricket and the spotlight that you’re under.”Pope’s classy innings at Emirates Old Trafford helped England from 122-4, a potentially perilous position. He added an unbroken 136 with Jos Buttler, who is unbeaten on 56, to leave the hosts with a superb opportunity to win the series. When told about Vaughan’s praise, Pope said: “It’s a massive compliment, especially from an ex-captain and one of the greats. “I take it as a massive positive, rather than seeing it as added pressure. It’s a nice thing to have said about you and hopefully I can fill those shoes.”With the three-match series poised at 1-1, England need to win in Manchester to regain the Wisden Trophy, which they surrendered to the West Indies in the Caribbean at the beginning of 2019.Victory for West Indies would mean their first series success in this country since 1988, while England are also trying to protect a six-year unbeaten home record. The outcome could be affected by the weather, with rain forecast at various points across the rest of the match.“Hopefully it doesn’t affect it too much,” said Pope. “If we can bat big then the dream scenario would be to get them in, make them follow-on and go again.”last_img read more
