Itoje will be next Lions captain says Warburton, who thinks AWJ’s starting place isn’t certain

first_imgThursday Apr 22, 2021 Itoje will be next Lions captain says Warburton, who thinks AWJ’s starting place isn’t certain Sam Warburton believes Maro Itoje has the edge over Alun Wyn Jones in the race to become British and Irish Lions captain for the summer tour to South Africa.ADVERTISEMENTA week after another former Lions skipper in Paul O’Connell endorsed the credentials of Owen Farrell, Warburton claimed that Itoje’s status as a certainty for the Test team is a major factor in his favour. The Saracens second row was one of England’s better performers in a poor Six Nations, but his high penalty count appeared to dent his chances of being chosen for the role by Warren Gatland. But Warburton, Lions captain in 2017 and 2019, does not see that as an obstacle for a player who excelled in New Zealand four years ago and offers more than Wales talisman Jones.“I’ve gone back and forth, but I’ll go with who I thought at the very beginning and that’s Maro Itoje,” Warburton said.“Anybody who looked at the first game of the Six Nations against Scotland where he conceded four or five penalties would say ‘oh you can’t do that’, but that was a bit of rustiness.“Warren will want him primed and ready to go as he’s one of the players who will be a guaranteed Test starter. I was extremely impressed with him in 2017 and Warren would have seen all that as well.ADVERTISEMENT“The other captaincy candidates are a little bit older. You question whether it would be a bit too much pressure for them to go through a tour like this at the end of the season.“I’ve gone back and forth with him and Alun Wyn Jones. Alun Wyn will be up there and I’m sure will captain games on tour, but I would probably go with Maro Itoje.“The reason I say Maro as captain is because I think he’s a dead cert and it’s between Alun Wyn and James Ryan to battle it out for that number five shirt.“Warren knows the pressure on the captain if they are not a guaranteed starter and I think there are six bankers to start a Test – Tadhg Furlong, Maro Itoje, Taulupe Faletau, Tom Curry, Anthony Watson and Stuart Hogg.ADVERTISEMENT“I don’t think he will pick a back as captain, so the other player who has the leadership experience he will want is Maro. If Alun Wyn is captain, though, you know you will be in safe hands.”Warburton excelled as a flanker in 74 Tests for Wales and five for the Lions and he sees the competition for back row places when Gatland names his squad on May 6 as ferocious with big-name casualties certain.“I don’t know who will miss out and it will be incredibly cruel, but I think Hamish Watson and Tom Curry will go. I think Sam Simmonds will go” he said.“Then you’ve also got people who can cover six like Maro Itoje, Courtney Lawes and Tadhg Beirne. All of those players plus the Welsh boys Justin Tipuric, Josh Navidi and Faletau don’t fit. There’s going to be some big, big omissions.“If Sam Underhill keeps playing well for Bath, he could go. England missed him and Lawes massively in the Six Nations. You can’t overlook them just because they missed the Six Nations.“All these brilliant back-rows aren’t going to go. Unfortunately, I’d love to see them all go and they’re all worthy of going, but I think there’s going to be a Welsh casualty.”Watson was named player of the 2021 Six Nations and Warburton rubbishes the claim that the powerful Scotland flanker, who stands 6’0 and is 16 stones, is too small to face the Springboks.“Hamish Watson is never too small. Power trumps size every day of the week. I think that Warren Gatland would be purring watching Hamish Watson over the Six Nations,” he said.“As things are right now he’s a Test starter and I can’t wait to see how he goes in the warm-up games.”Sam Warburton was speaking as Canterbury launched the British & Irish Lions Test Jersey. (Credit: Pasadena Now/James Carbone)[Updated] A San Marino man arrested on suspicion of federal weapons charges after driving his flag-draped truck through a crowd of demonstrators in Pasadena in late-May will be released from custody pending trial with conditions including a $10 million bond, GPS-monitoring and the surrender of all firearms, according to the terms of an agreement reached between prosecutors and the defendant on Wednesday. As terms of his release, Benjamin Jong Ren Hung, 28, will also be required to undergo drug testing, submit to a search of his home at any time, surrender his passport, limit travel to the Central District of California, stay home between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. and refrain from any contact with victims or witnesses related to the investigation, according to court documents. The bond was to be secured by affidavits of surety signed by Hung’s parents, backed by properties they owned in Pasadena, South Pasadena and Los Angeles, records show.Prosecutors specified three guns — two rifles and a pistol — that were to be turned over to federal officials by the defendant’s counsel.Once the terms of the agreement had been met, Hung was expected to be released from custody later this month, U.S. Department of Justice spokesman Thom Mrozek said.Investigators had already seized more than 30 guns, “including several assault rifles and modified short-barrel rifles that are illegal to possess under federal and state law,” as part of their investigation, according to court documents. More than 70,000 rounds of ammunition and tens of thousands of dollars worth of “tactical assault equipment” were also seized.Hung was first arrested May 31 after he drove a 4×4 pickup truck he called his “War Rig” through a crowd of Black Lives Matter demonstrators in Pasadena, narrowly missing several, according to officials and court documents.Pasadena police arrested him after finding a loaded handgun in his truck, along with items including a machete, a metal pipe and a megaphone, police said at the time. He was released a short time later after posting a $30,000 bond.But he drew the attention of federal investigators, who arrested Hung again in September on federal charges of conspiracy to transport firearms across state lines and making a false statement in the acquisition of firearms.Investigators have determined Hung was stockpiling a cache of illegal and unregistered weapons and participating in a group calling themselves “Shooters of the Nest,” using a portion of his parents’ vineyard in Lodi as a training center, prosecutors allege.Hung and his group “wrote about their efforts to train for urban combat, and their desire to amass an arsenal to confront and kill members of ‘Antifa,’” according to a court filing made by prosecutors.Additional charges against Hung were being considered, federal officials said. The bond agreement between Hung and prosecutors came the day of a scheduled detention review hearing, in which Hung had been expected to dispute a judge’s previous order that he be held without bond pending trial due to an ongoing threat posed to the public.A trial was scheduled for Dec. 8, Mrozek said.See also:Court Documents Outline Plotting, Weapon Stockpiling by San Marino Man Accused of Driving Truck Into Protesters in PasadenaMan Who Allegedly Drove Truck at Demonstrators in Old Pasadena Will Remain JailedOld Pasadena Truck Attack Suspect Pleads Not GuiltyMan Accused of Truck Attack on Protesters in Pasadena Arrested in Federal Weapons Case 26 recommended0 commentsShareShareTweetSharePin it Community News Public Safety San Marino Man Charged in Weapons Case After Allegedly Driving Through Protesters in Pasadena to Be Released on $10 Million Bond By BRIAN DAY Published on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 | 5:33 pm More Cool Stuff HerbeautyStop Eating Read Meat (Before It’s Too Late)HerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeauty15 Countries Where Men Have Difficulties Finding A WifeHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeauty6 Strong Female TV Characters Who Deserve To Have A SpinoffHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeautyWant To Seriously Cut On Sugar? Support for land beneficiaries

first_img18 February 2008South Africa and Belgium have developed a plan to provide crucial skills and access to resources to the beneficiaries – now numbering over 450 000 households – of South Africa’s land reform programme. The Department of Agriculture and Land Affairs, in collaboration with the Belgian Embassy in South Africa, will launch the plan, known as the settlement and implementation support (SIS) strategy, in Pretoria on Monday. With financial and technical support from the Belgian government, the department has developed the support strategy over two years, in a process that involved extensive consultation with land reform experts, researchers and consultants. The department believes the successful implementation of the strategy will make a huge contribution towards the sustainability of land reform in the country.Over 90% of claims settledBy August 2007, the Land Claims Commission had settled 93% of land claims lodged by claimants before the 31 December 1998 deadline. This represents a settlement of 74 559 of the 79 696 claims lodged. The commission is mandated to transfer 30% of commercial farm land to black beneficiaries by 2014, translating to about 25 million hectares of land.In October 2007, chief land claims commissioner Thozi Gwanya said the land that has been claimed by the government so far has cost the state close to R13-billion.To date, Gwanya said, 453 840 households have benefited from the restitution process, equating to some two million hectares of land that has been redistributed to claimants.Other land reform programmes, he said, have resulted in the transfer of a further two million hectares, pushing the final figure to four million hectares so far.“With regard to restitution, 80% of the claims lodged were urban claims,” Gwanya added. “We have settled urban claims financially to the value of about R5-billion.”Gwanya said there were 5 136 claims outstanding, of which most were rural claims. Of these, 73 cases were currently before the Land Claims Court.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

Foam Shrinks, and Other Lessons

Building Science Corp. was young and growing, and we needed a bigger office. The barn would be that office for the next 10 years. In fact, Betsy Pettit wrote about it in “Remodeling for Energy Efficiency” (FHB #194).The first thing we did was to cut all the overhangs off the barn roof and wrap the outside of the building with plastic. Next, we applied 8-in.-thick expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam on the walls and 10 in. of EPS on the roof. On top of the roof, we installed a layer of plywood as a nailing base for the shingles. The plywood cantilevered past the edge of the barn’s roof to form the new overhang. Our first lesson came about four months after the retrofit was complete: When the first frost hit the roof, I discovered an obvious melting pattern. At the seams between the foam panels, warm air was escaping and melting the frost. Rather than installing one thick layer of foam, I should have installed multiple layers, offsetting the joints and staggering the seams. I decided to fix that when I replaced the shingles. The first sign of trouble. Melted frost on the new roof pointed to a problem during the first winter: Heat was escaping between the seams of the foam sheets. The author had used mastic and mesh tape to seal the seams, but that wasn’t enough to keep in the heat. Turns out that the actual problem was a little more interesting. See below for the solution. I was curious about a few other things:Clearly, there were more issues with this building than just the shingles and the foam, and they have been nagging at me for more than a decade.… last_img read more
