Renovation of an old house, in an attempt to convert the traditional program to that of a modern house by replacing the decrepit sections. The deteriorated 300-years old wooden gate house, the “oku” (private section) and the northern volume under lean-to roof were dismantled, leaving the relatively well-kept 90-years-old main building with its traditional square grid plan (with four rooms). After that, around the main building, a private room, water utilities and the traffic line (ramp) are added. Excess in the original floor space is reduced to correspond to the size of the family. The reinforcement is provided through an airy, soft wrapping. The structure of the new section is a 2×4 inch wooden system. The irregular gate-shaped volume on the façade is an independent private room with terrace housed above the parking space, representing the imagery of the original gate revived.Save this picture!Courtesy of katsuhiro miyamoto & associatesProject gallerySee allShow lessIntroducing Living ArchitectureArticlesT Bailey Offices / Olson Kundig ArchitectsArticles Share ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOrhttps://www.archdaily.com/68236/hankai-house-katsuhiro-miyamoto-associates Clipboard Projects CopyAbout this officeKatsuhiro Miyamoto & AssociatesOfficeFollow#TagsProjectsBuilt ProjectsSelected ProjectsResidential ArchitectureHousesRefurbishmentRenovationWoodHousesJapanPublished on July 12, 2010Cite: “Hankai House / Katsuhiro Miyamoto & Associates” 12 Jul 2010. When is it acceptable to make money off sweetgrass

first_imgTamara Pimentel APTN NewsEarlier this week APTN News reported that an Alberta elder was furious a department store in Calgary was selling sweetgrass. She said traditional medicines aren’t meant to be profitable. But when is it acceptable to make money from sweetgrass?Amy Willier and her mother, Yvonne Jobin, run Moonstone Creations in Calgary. It’s a gift shop selling Indigenous art and clothing, along with sage, sweetgrass and smudge kits.Willier argues times have changed.“I can see people being upset with the lack of protocol and having an expectation when you’re picking medicines and using medicines, that it’s done in a traditional way,” she said.“But from a store perspective I also can understand that, yea, you kind of need to make money.”Willier said her sweetgrass is picked by an elder from Saskatchewan who is paid with tobacco and money.“Traditionally we gave gifts – It’s an exchange,” she said. “The exchange right now is money because it costs gas to go and pick. It all costs money because that’s the world that we live in.“The question here in the middle of winter, in January, the question is – are you going to smudge, or not smudge? If you want to smudge you’re going to find a source.”[email protected]last_img read more
